There seems to be so many brands of paint or wall coatings out there, many of which claim to last until the end of the world (!), but of course read the small print, and the paint you bought on the shelf at B and Q may possible last for 15 years, but only if applied under laboratory conditions by a decorator approved by the paint company & in perfect weather!

What properties are you looking for in a Wall Coating?

Wall coatings and paints each have specific uses depending on what type of paint they are:

• Gloss paint is useful for painting metal or door surrounds and is fairly hard wearing.
• Emulsion paint is usually water based and is best for ceilings or internal walls.
• Lime "wash", old fashioned paint type product made from lime and water. Good for historic buildings.
• Pliolite masonry paint is a cheap alternative for exterior walls but doesnt last long.
• Exterior weatherproof wall coatings are hardy paint coatings for all year round use.

Exterior wall coatings come in 2 main types; Render based or resin based.

The render based exterior coatings are applied by Trowel in a similar fashion to mortar, and the resin based wall coatings are applied by spray machine. Both types of exterior wall coatings provide excellent weatherproof and colour fast properties and really DO what it says on the tin!

Painting my garden shed, will the paint stick?

My husband picked up some Ronseal to use on the fence and shed outside, but it's in forest green and I had hoped to use different colours. I've been told that you can't paint exterior wood and expect it to last more than a month, but how is that possible when people paint wooden houses? I know a paint job won't last forever, but it lasts a while.

I want to paint the shed specific colours, is there a particular paint I could use? Please help!

sand down area
use primer paint
use 2 coats of undercoat
then 2 coats of gloss or matt depending on finish

do not paint in damp or strong sunlight and allow coats to dry before re applying
