Why has my skin color totally changed?

I'm of Italian heritage and since the day I was born up to age 16 I had olive skin, i never burned, always tanned and FAST. I'm 27 now and I stopped going in the sun when I became interested in skin care & anti aging. So after 11 years of avoiding the sun my skin is the lightest on a skin chart. I am always the lightest skin person everywhere I go.
