Painting Rooms
Painting the room in a careful order will help you prevent drips or spills of one colour onto another.
1 - Paint the ceiling. If there's a ceiling rose or other mouldings, give them an initial coat of paint and complete after finishing the ceiling.
2 - Paint the walls working away from the light source.
3 - Paint window frames, picture rail (if any), radiators and doors.
4 - Paint the skirting
Painting a Ceiling
Working with your arms above your head can be hard work so decide on a roller or paint pad for fast coverage and, if you can come across the colour you want, use solid emulsion (roger paint), which makes much less mess. Utilizing long handles makes reaching easier but can also affect the way you control the roller. It may better to stand on a plank between two sets of step ladders, but ensure it's stable.
1 Paint a narrow strip around the perimeter of the ceiling where the roller won't reach, using a narrow cutting-in brush.
2 Paint a wider strip parallel to one edge with a wide brush, paint pad or roller, leaving a small gap.
3 When you come to the end of the run, reverse the direction and use the brush, pad or roller to fill inside the gap. If needed, go over it again lightly to blend in the paint.
4 Reload with paint and begin a new line, once again leaving a small gap, and continue until the ceiling is complete.
How to apply paint
Applying paint to a room may seem to be a easy job but if particular rules are not adhered to complications can arise. Paint can be applied either with a brush, roller or, occasionally, a sprayer:
Making use of a brush
Apply the paint with a brush between 100 and 150mm wide. Dip no more than half of the bristles into the paint and wipe off excess on the edge of the tin. Work across the ceiling, back from the window, in 600mmstrips. Turn the brush on its edge to paint a band round the edge of the ceiling, working right into the wall. The overlap will either be covered by paint on the wall or by wallpaper. Then turn the brush full face and proceed to paint in strips. When you're applying emulsion, you're not governed by a strict painting pattern as it does not readily form solid lines.
Making use of a roller
A paint roller will speed the operation considerably which is welcome, as painting a ceiling is tiring. Paint a band around the room utilizing a brush: the roller can't reach into the ceiling wall angle. To steer clear of spatters, load the idler with paint and remove the excess by rolling it on the ribbed end of the tray, out of the paint. Maintain the roller close to the surface all the time and apply the paint in crisscross strokes. Finish off by lightly by brushing in one direction, parallel to one wall, in really light strokes. Use a brush on any mouldings and a brush to apply paint around them.
Spray painting
For exceptional swiftness when painting walls, you can use spray guns. Guns can he bought or hired, are either electrically powered or work by pump action and can be utilized with emulsion or gloss paints.
You will have to mask off the skirting boards and floor, taping the sheets down with masking tape, and the same should be done for switches, sockets and light fittings. Newspaper around the floor close to the walls will soak up any flying spray.
Apply the paint in horizontal bands but spray the two sides of an interior corner separately. For an even coverage, maintain the nozzle at right angles to the wall, 150mm to 200mm away and don't swing it from side to side.
How to paint and varnish woodwork.
Applying paint or varnish to woodwork requires a diverse approach to covering walls and ceiling. This is how you can do it:
Painting
When painting wood brush along the grain. On a narrow region, a single movement will likely be enough to cover it, but with wide areas, apply paint in parallel bands, reloading the brush prior to painting each strip. Aim for a smooth flowing movement for even coverage. After painting the second band, paint across the grain to join the two strips. 'Lay off' with light strokes along the grain for a smooth finish. Use two coats of undercoat when covering a dark base - cheaper than an extra coat of gloss.
Varnishing
If covering a previously varnished or stained surface, sand and clean it. If varnishing bare wood or bare cork, apply a base coat thinned with 10 per cent white spirit. Dip the brush into the tin of varnish so that half the bristle area is covered, and apply it along the grain brushing out across the grain from the wet edge for even coverage. There's no pigment in varnish to disguise mistakes, so take care to brush out overlaps and brush marks. Finish by brushing along the grain again with a single smooth stroke. If more than one coat is required, lightly sand with fine abrasive paper when dry and clean with white spirit between each coat.

is using a roller better than a pad, when painting?
if you are trying to paint a little area it is best to use a lil pad. but if there is texture and or big area to paint i think the roller is the best.
