Drilling Holes The Right Way With Masonry Drill Bits
You might think that drilling a hole in a wall is easy to do and requires no training and minimal effort. Well, you are partially correct. Using a drill to place a hole in a wall is simple, but placing it correctly is a different matter entirely. Homes all across the nation have walls punctuated with holes that were drilled in completely the wrong way or else they are the incorrect size. That's correct, an unbelievable amount of DIY wannabes use a drill bit that is too large or small or else they drill straight through the wall when all they wanted to do was hang a picture. Most drilling jobs can be completed using masonry drill bits or a step drill bit. Although there are dozens of other options, these bits can do everything any other bit can do, only better.
Masonry drill bits have tips made from tungsten carbide which has been bonded to a steel shaft. Occasionally, a silicon bronze alloy will be used instead. These bits can drill through any surface that is concrete or stone based. While it is possible to use them in a hand brace, this is not advised as it takes far too much effort to produce a good result. When used in a power drill like it should be, these drill bits are remarkably effective. When drilling harder materials, be sure to have the drill operating at a low speed. Otherwise, the tip could overheat with cheaper bits having a propensity to shatter under the strain.
If you are drilling into metal, a step drill bit is the best option unless the metal is very thick. It gets its name because the drill bit increases in diameter from the tip to the shaft. They are designed to make the hole bigger as it drills through. With smaller drill bits of this kind, there is no need to use a pilot bit. When using a large step drill, ensure that a hole has already been drilled beforehand which is at least the diameter of the smallest step on the bit. Always wear some sort of safety equipment like goggles while drilling.
When drilling a metal hole, always use a center punch on the metal to mark off where you want the middle of the hole to be. This should ensure that the drill does not drift away from its intended target. Use the small step drill bit first and go straight through the hole as far as you can. Remove the small bit and replace it with the larger one. Place the tip of the drill bit into the hole just created and start drilling again. Continue until the hole is the exact diameter you planned it to be.
As you can see, whether you are using masonry drill bits to cut through brick or step drill bits to cut into metal, it is not as easy as pointing and aiming. It is important to protect your eyes at all times and also stop every few seconds to remove shavings from the drill bit as well as applying tapping fluid to ensure the bit works smoothly.

Crawlspace side under masonry house/floor/support needs to be insulated. How to do it yourself?
The floors in the winter are cooold!
I have looked into the crawl space and the construction of the floors are like concrete I-beams.
It is smooth enough to apply foam insulation to it and I am able to crawl with about a foot of room to spare.
Has someone any experience with attempting this project and will give me some advise ?
I appreciate those concerns regarding the difficulty of this spray foam project. And, the choice to hire a professional to do it.
The house is old along with it's plumbing and electric wiring.
