Darkening the woodstain on a formica desk?

Hi, I've got a maple wood desk made of maple formica and wanted to change it to antique pine. Is it possible to use woodstain or wax to darken the colour?

wax wont work, but you could sand it down a bit (wearing a mask) and use some antique pine varnish or one of those kitchen cupboard paints that they have in diy stores
